Your cover letter should match your background and qualifications to the specific position, and give the committee enough information that they want to contact you. It enhances your CV and other materials, and elaborates on your academic training and background as they pertain to the specific position.
- Read the job description. Address each of the required qualifications.
- Give examples. Don't just state that you have experience; demonstrate it.
- Show interest. Research the institution, and show why you are a good fit.
- Be succinct. A one-pager is standard in the sciences. Humanities can go up to two.
